Veeco Instruments/Orders -2: Street Sees 4Q Net 33c/Shr (reports 2/5/01)

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (Dow Jones)--Veeco Instruments Inc. (VECO) expects to report
fourth quarter orders of about $184 million, exceeding the company's prior
expectations.
In a press release Wednesday, the company said optical telecommunications
bookings represented about 45% of total orders. The orders included about
$63 million for Veeco's Spector ion beam deposition system, which is used to
make thin film optical filters.
A Thomson Financial/First Call survey of 14 analysts predicted fourth
quarter net income of 33 cents a share.
For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1999, Veeco earned $1.1 million,
including charges, on sales of $63.8 million.
The company makes ion beam etching and surface measurement devices for
making microelectronic products.
