I was not aware that anyone had said that Rarebird. All the men in our family served in the military, but all the men in our family respect conscientious objectors. After all, what my father thought he was fighting against in WWII was tyranny- and only tyranny would expect all it's citizenry to support every war without opposition. The whole point of being in a free country is so you CAN express your conscience.

My father knew that before he went to war. And he remembered it after. But then he was, even with his flaws, a man worthy of respect.

My father would probably have had compassion even for people who did not go to war because they were afraid to fight. I know he wished he had not been in WWII since it ruined his life.

Yes, I remember those posts well, still, I appreciate the refresher... I don't have any problem with conscientious objectors at the time, they were able to serve in non-combatant ways... I certainly respect one's internal preferences even though they may conflict with external demands... When I enlisted, I met a number of conscientious objectors during and before my basic training, but they did serve when they were called.....

Today, we can enjoy the benefit of 20-20 hindsight and casually discuss the rightness and wrongness of the Vietnam policies, but the domino theory was actually in full swing and it was real, contrary to what many people think today...

Just as an aside, we all know that history tends to repeat itself if we're not vigilant of history... no joke, during a recent study, high school students were asked if they knew what the domino theory was and 70% of them thought that it meant if the pizza didn't arrive within 30 minutes, the pizza is free..... what happened to the educational system in our country? Soldiers should protect us from hostilities and teachers should protect us from ignorance.....
