JakeStraw, you still haven't given me a link..." objective evidence ".

You are doing the same thing I used to do when I started my
fellowship. I gave my mentor

-opinion
-circumstantial evidence.
-I quoted books, as evidence, ( not realizing that books
are based on original articles research material which
can sometimes be interpreted in various way be different
book authors).

So his answer was the same:

" Where is the original article? "
" Did you read it? "

You'll be surprised ( I was ), how often book material was
based on inadequate, poorly interpreted studies.
Sometimes books where not up to date.

We learned to always examine

" original evidence ".
"Go to, and interpret the source ".
"Do your own interpretation ".

This BTW is "the Harvard method ", where he trained...vbg.

He was an SOB hard to get along with, but unfortunately he was always
right...and there was nothing you could do
about it....except do exactly as he told you....

:-)

Jake,

I think you're wasting your time. Tunica is thinking only uni-dimensionally. It's either black or white. You're in or out, you're long or short.

Most other prudent investors/traders consider a 3, or at least 2 dimensional vision of investing. The second, and so aptly pointed out by you, dimension is: THE TIME HORIZON. The third, if interested, is a framework/classification of money into the time horizon.

You're absolutely right. The ST trading patterns of the market are very risky and frankly stink even for professionals. The MT trading patterns of the market are even riskier considering the economy and the fact that we're about to start earnings and guidance for all sectors and companies. However, IMHO, the LT vision of optics, to me, continues to be very bright.

Tunica is saying that NOW is the time to invest, regardless of horizon. I say NO. Now is a risky time to invest ST or MT, and there is even a small amount of LT risk. However, maybe TUNICA's point has been unstated. It is, from the best I can gather from his numerous posts is: The risk of investing now DECLINES as your TIME HORIZON EXTENDS.

That is the point that TUNICA has tacitly been preaching, I think, for the last week, or even longer. However, he been saying: "Buy now, regardless of anything, timeframe or otherwise. You're going to miss the train". Pooh. That's a disconnect.

Most of us are already on the train.

Steve

There is plenty of evidence and links available to show that the Telecom Service providers and infrastructure vendors are going thru slow-down and new business paradigm.
However, I will argue (opinions, no evidence) that this slow-down is primarily in old infrastructure, technology. Because of the new business paradigm and demand for high speed internet access, higher bandwidth- the demand for optical network elements are going to be higher. Carriers can't afford to slow-down in this area.

Companies like Lucent, Ericsson are suffering due to their exposure in the traditional infrastructure business. JDSU, Nortel, Alcatel, part of Cisco, CIEN, Corning are going to be help bring technology sector up this year, due to growth in Optical business. Nortel had problems meeting and handling the demands.

Again, in my opinion, if there is a bright spot in technology sector in 2001, it's in Optical, B2B (ITWO, ARBA) companies.

-Nilesh.
