RESEARCH ALERT-Wit Soundview cuts Qualcomm to hold

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Wit Soundview analyst Matthew Hoffman said on Wednesday that he cut his rating on Qualcomm Inc. <QCOM.O> to hold from buy and reduced his 2001 and 2002 earnings estimates.

On Tuesday, Nokia Corp. <NOK.N>, which sells handsets that use Qualcomm's proprietary CDMA technology, reported weaker than expected global sales for 2000.

He cut his 2001 EPS view for Qualcomm to $1.18 from $1.27, and his 2002 view to $1.40 from $1.50. The analysts' consensus estimate is $1.27 for 2001 and $1.66 for 2002, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Hoffman also cut his revenue estimates for fiscal year 2001 to $2.645 billion from $2.842 billion and for 2002 to $3.215 billion from $3.434 billion.

Shares of Qualcomm were off $3-1/2 to $69-3/4 in Nasdaq market trading on Wednesday. The stock has a 52-week range of $51-1/2 to $163.
