Jerry Miller: <25% more chips can be made per wafer ...The improved efficiency will reduce the high production costs that have hindered the mass utilization of RDRAMs.>

I am afraid the article is sadly mistaken. It is
a known fact (widely advertised by Rambus) that the
RAMBUS interface adds no more than 10% to the DRAM
die size. Hence the raw Rambus chips are more
expensive by no more than 10% since the wafer processing
must be about the same. Yet the prices of a finished
consumer product - RIMM - are still 5 times more than
the price of SDRAM of equal capacity. Therefore,
there must be something else besides the larger
die area. That "something" is the cost of manufacturing
of these RIMMs to unbearably high tolerances. This
cost differential will remain high no matter what,
so RDRAM will be always at significant cost disadvantage
while delivering no performance differences.
