Ok,

I run Win NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. The MFC4*.DLL 's are installed by application as part of the microsoft foundation classes which a lot of applications are built upon. Frequently you will find more than one. On my system, which is actually fairly clean since I just installed it on a new laptop, I have 4 instances of MFC42.DLL including the one in WINNT\SYSTEM32

If you are running Win NT 4.0 its also possible that DLL's and other such files are automatically hidden from your view. In Windows NT Explorer you need to enable the display.

I don't have an NT 4.0 machine handy at the moment, and believe the option moved slighly in Windows 2000, but bear with me and look for it.

To do this, in NT Explorer choose either the View or Tools menu. Under it you should find something similar to Folder Options, or Options.

What you need to do is enable the display of System files including DLL 's.

Then reexecute your search.

And I suspect we'll say 'voila'...
