A large number of stocks that dropped sharply in 2000 probably had some tax loss selling in December that wasn't balanced by any natural buyers. This was especially noticeable for stocks that had a heavy individual ownership base. Tax loss selling isn't beneficial at all for a lot of institutions.

LU has a higher than average individual base of shareholders, a carryover from its T spin off.
