you got that right...many have been riding high on the wealth effect...spending like they are millionaires...too bad they were and/or are only paper millionaires. Credit crunch on the way...3 billion in market cap already out of the nasdaq...just wait until the dow and s&p get halved. That effect will make this nasdaq sell off seem like a total joke.

The trick is getting consumers to spend, which I don't think is possible

Chic, 1999 into early 2000 blowout retail year because of y2k, markets etc. 2000 not great but not a disaster. Average the two years together and divide by 2. Not so bad. There was too optimism going into christmas season by retailer but we didnt have a retail strike, just a reduction. Lower interst rate will cure that along with tax cuts and no huge unemployment.
