ZTE Corp. receives networking license for telecom equipment from MII

(10 January 2001) ZTE Corp. recently got the final go-ahead in its struggle to become the first Chinese company to produce code division multiple access (CDMA) network technology.

ZTE Corp.’s ZXC10 CDMA serial mobile communications system has become the first to obtain a networking license for telecommunications equipment from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), according to the Jan. 5 Zhongguo Dianzi Bao (China Electronics News).

ZTE's ZXC10 CDMA serial mobile communications system passed the final evaluation of the examination group for telecommunications equipment under the MII in October 2000. The overall design of ZTE's ZXC 10 CDMA system conforms to the relevant Chinese regulations and requirements for 800 megahertz (MHz) CDMA digital cellular mobile communications networks.

In addition, its design takes into consideration the possibility of an upgrade to the CDMA 2000 IX system, the article said.

Since 1997, ZTE Corp. has negotiated extensively with the U.S.-based Qualcomm to obtain an intellectual property rights (IPR) patent license and import CDMA technology. ZTE has served as a chief representative of domestic CDMA manufacturers. It has participated in all the negotiations on IPR between the MII’s Science and Technology Department, China Unicom and Qualcomm.

On Feb. 16, China Unicom concluded the IPR framework agreement after three rounds of negotiations. With the conclusion of this agreement, the issue of Qualcomm’s CDMA patent for the Chinese CDMA manufacturing industry was resolved, and the major obstacle to the commercialization of the product by the Chinese CDMA manufacturing industry was overcome.

ZTE's ZXC10 is compatible with other manufacturers’ equipment belonging to the same category. Its ZXC10-MSS CDMA switching subsystem is compatible with Ericsson (China) and Guangdong Nortel's CDMA base station subsystems. ZTE's ZXC10-BSS CDMA base station subsystem is compatible with Datang Telecom's CDMA switching subsystem.
