Simmons, the "Perrennial Oil Bull"

I love Matt Simmons, he is one of the best oil analysts in the business bar none. But he is not known as the "perennial oil bull" for nothing.

Bullsky: Small correction. IMO, Simmons is more of an investment banker than an analyst. Don't get me wrong. He's a very smart guy, and he knows how to interpret data and direct research staff, but he doesn't do the analytical work himself. He has a crack team of analysts in his firm that do the detailed work for him, e.g., Dan Pickering, former Fidelity fund manager of FSESX back during the 1997 OSX glory days.

Nevertheless, as the namesake, managing principal, and chief rainmaker of Simmons & Company, International, Matt rightly gets the vast majority of visability within the firm.

Just remember that Matt makes the most money when his firm does M&A deals, and more deals get done when prices are high than when they are low. (I know, it sounds counterintuitive, but it's true.) Anyway, that's why I've always treated Matt's bullish views as a little understandably biased.
