BMFM,

< the internet might be the biggest thing ever ...
but how the hell is Yahoo going to make money out of it unless everyone of us start sending them 10 bucks a month ... >

Do you mean that Yahoo! is going to start selling porn? lol How's that for diversification and profit margins.

Regards,

BMFM, Even with the lowered expectations, YHOO will be making money. The issue is with demand, not so much about the company. Once online advertising demand picks up, YHOO will be good shape.

That might be the answer. Yahoo has to team up with somebody. This "I am going to do it alone" strategy is obviously wrong.

What would make a great team? Well, you need broadband access, so Yahoo should get together with ATHM somehow. Content? How about Disney - they are dying to go against AOL/TWX.

You have AOL/TWX who are getting organized on one side.

On the other side you have ATT / YHOO / ATHM / DIS / MSFT / AMZN who are not organized, need each other, and in some combination have the necessary firepower to stand up to AOL/TWX.

Will they get together? Naaaah. They're just sheep standing in line waiting to get sheared.

Would a possible model be network televison?

CBS doesn't charge me for watching. They make their money in ads. They generate (or buy) content (news, sports, TV shows, etc.) to entice me to watch them instead of NBC, or read a book, or read SI. The trick, of course, is to be able to charge enough for ads while delivering enough viewers. Nobody has been able to do that sucessfully, yet. The breakthrough for Yahoo, or anybody, will be getting significant ad revenue from GM, Ford, and GE that now goes to the TV networks. Until then, profits will be limited.

Sincerely,

Wm Chaney
