I could send them to the public school across the street, but that would be a high price to pay for the privilege of a bike ride.

Scumbria-

I spent 5 years in Boulder in the '60s. Back then, it was certainly all you describe, and less. I get back there often, and it has changed for the worse, sad to say. Compared to Denver, it is still pretty nice.
I assume you support school vouchers, given your comment about public schools.
