I would apply the first amendment to the spoken and written word as well as paintings and sculpture and performance art, etc...So really the "Bill of Rights" should have been the people authorizing the government to ensure certain rights? The government's (IMO) sole purpose is to ensure that our rights are not violated. The Bill of Rights was added to the constitution to specifically ensure that the government also did not violate our rights since the government has the power to suppress them. The Bill of Rights was specifically intended to government power over the individual. I like it the way it is written. Are you saying I don't have a right to express myself in art, gestures? Are you saying we shouldn't authorize the gov to ensure that I do? I am specifically saying that you have the inherent right to express yourself in whatever way you desire. When I say that the government doesn't have the right to support it, by that, I mean that they shouldn't be giving you money in return for whatever way you are expressing yourself. The government should do nothing to stop you from expressing yourself and they should do nothing to support you. When we give the government rights, such as the - right to support freedom of expression - the right to protect property rights - rights to our bodies (a property right if you ask me) Again, we did not give the government the right to support freedom of expression, we limited the government's ability to suppress it. I have not read the Constitution in a while, but I don't remember any place where it says that we have given the government the right to support freedom of expression. However, if you work for a corporation and you decide to do a performance art piece in the nude on your bosses desk, that corporation has the right to limit your expression since that is in their property domain. As such, your right to express yourself has interfered with their right to control their property. Protecting property rights is a specific responsibility of the government. We have given the government the power to protect property rights and in so doing have given of some of our rights. I think that we agree on this.
