Well, I was referring to a somewhat different issue, but ok, at least we are at the point of giving both claims some weight Taking your issue, of course it is desirable for more people to know a second or even third language. Knowledge is useful. But, for example, in India there are so many different languages and dialects, and so many do not know Hindi, that English is the primary language of the educated class. It is expeditious that some lingua franca be available. In the United States, we already have a common language, and it would be desirable to keep it. Additionally, it would do a disservice to immigrants to encourage them to continue self- segregation through language barriers. There is, therefore, good reason to keep pressure on for the immigrant to learn the common language........
