There may be. I know of none.

Better disk drive technology, assuming the devices are still rotating storage with track seeking read/write heads, will not disrupt WAFL. They will only serve as a more efficient device for WAFL to use.

The technology that we are looking for to disrupt WAFL will either be a new file layout supported by software that is compliant with NFS and CIFS file protocol, sits on industry-standard "commodity" hardware, and is significantly more efficient than WAFL or

a new drive technology that obviates the latency of rotating storage and/or track seeking read/write heads.
