but if society supports these things, why do we need the government to do it? Why don't we let the private sector take care of it? The government is a massive bureaucracy, it is inefficient, a dollar donated to a private organization will have a much higher percentage rate return than one given to the government.

I am not saying "don't support the arts" I am saying "the government is the wrong entity to support the arts".
