It is absurd to consider any single piece of the environment to not be part of the whole.

"Wholes" are usually made up of "pieces." :)

I would contend that central park in NYC is more important than an area of equal size in the middle of Canada, given the nubmer of people who enjoy it. (not that I want the outdoors to be as crowded!) But that's the origin of my environmentalism.

As for our grand children calling us idiots, they certianly will wonder why we allowed all these species to go extinct without trying very hard to preserve their DNA (any in many many copies per species, not just one). One day, very far off, they may decide to undo many of the thing's we've done. It's like burning the only copy of a book.
