That is correct. The interface to filers is via the protocols set by MSFT (CIFS) and SUNW (NFS). Because EMC is channel connected, they have to get into the nuts and bolts of each hardware vendors I/O system.

Do you see NTAP publishing its WAFL interfaces for its industry partners? I haven't heard of it.

The only need for publishing WAFL interfaces was for the purpose of backup device vendors. NTAP did that by starting the NDMP coalition years ago. That gave the backup vendors a set of standards to interface to and those standards were adopted by a host of storage companies. Other than that, CIFS, NFS, and HTTP are the interfaces to WAFL. (OPEN/PROPRIETARY)
