That is, two innovations are then required. One to make flash robust (permanent), and another to make it scale well. I would assume neither is easy. What I don't know is if either/both are possible.

Good points and worth watching the horizon for signs. I can't imagine Terabyte flash farms for a while, though.

There have been many "mass" storage products based on RAM over the years. They just cost too damn much and the demand for storage keeps outrunning the scalability of such devices, even for local storage, now in the 30GB-60GB range.
