The Return of the January Effect
By James J. Cramer

1/11/01 2:13 PM ET

Could we be seeing the return of the January effect?....Last year's bludgeoning, however, produced some massive tax-loss selling in December. Some stocks got absolutely crushed and now they are springing back to life in a fashion I haven't seen in a half a decade.

Stocks like Dell (DELL:Nasdaq - news - boards) and WorldCom (WCOM:Nasdaq - news - boards), where things haven't really changed, are ramping, as if the selling pressure has simply expired. Same with Motorola (MOT:NYSE - news - boards). There was nothing bullish about Motorola's earnings....But it does seem that the sellers cleared out in December and now the market is free to range higher...
