TMC awards Alcatel a 32 million euro contract for expansion and
upgrade of the Telecommunication Company of Tehran's Network

Paris, France, January 11, 2001 - Iranian Telecommunication Manufacturing Co. (ITMC)
has awarded Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) with a contract worth over 32
million euros for the network expansion and upgrade of several Alcatel 1000 switching
exchanges operated by the Telecommunication Company of Tehran (TCT).

This project is part of the third five-year plan of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in which the
present network will be expanded to 15 million telephone lines. The contract will cover
deliveries of hardware, software, factory know-how, transfer and training.

As a result of this project, new features and functions such as CCS#7 signalling, ISDN,
V5.2, etc. within the TCT network will be possible, and will provide the platform for TCT to
be prepared for the migration to Next Generation Networks. The operator will be able to
offer fast access due to the signalling and ISDN capabilities, while the network will be able
to evolve with the customers' increasing demands for voice and internet services.

"Our decision in favor of Alcatel was based on the company's years of experience and
leading position in the public exchange sector," explained Ebrahim Vahedi, Managing
Director of ITMC. "The new Alcatel 1000 exchanges will provide advanced
telecommunication services as requested by the Iranian Service Provider TCI."

Alcatel's President of Switching and Routing activities, Etienne Fouques, commented:
"Alcatel 1000 represents approximately one third of all digital switches installed in the
Islamic Republic of Iran, and we are very pleased to continue our long lasting partnership
as a major network infrastructure supplier in the Iranian Telecommunication market. "

One out of every five telephone subscribers in the world is connected to an Alcatel
switching exchange. Alcatel holds 20% of the worldwide switching market with over 280
million lines installed.

Yes, I saw those thanks! I think we knew that 2000 would be OK, I'm anxious to hear what 'ole Serge has to say about 2001. COO comments sound like they were reassuring. This is ALA's chance to REALLY steal the spotlight. Still hoping my March 70's may come back to life yet<g>.

regards,
