Good News - the semi equips had a very good week this week. The group is up 16 percent while the SOX-X and NASDAQ were each up 9 percent. All 31 stocks in the group(CFMT and GSNX have merged recently and no longer exist) were in positive territory for the week. 9 stocks were up 20 percent or more. The next years earnings and growth data were updated last week and are used in the table below. Sorry about the mess below. The editing feature(s) are not working properly. Two industry research organizations (Reported in SJ Mercury News this week) have predicted flat sales for the semi-equip group in 2001 and 2002. If this holds up, the stocks are cheap and I agree with the statement above. I would not be too aggressive in following the predictions. The fed moved aggressively because the slowdown has become serious and both expansions and contractions tend to feed on themselves and exacerbate the problem. I would wait for the quarterly reports and conference calls. They are not going to be easy to listen to, and it is not certain what level of prices adequately discounts the current business conditions.
