My mother told me about polio coming in the summers. Her best friend ended up in an iron lung. My mother went to visit her. Another of my mother's friends was stabbed by her own uncle who had been gassed in WWI. My mother's 5 year old brother died of scarlet fever. They were too poor to get a doctor. My mother had fillings put in with no anesthetic. I could go on and on about what my mother has told me- and what I remember of the early 60's. I am not sure things are worse now. I would not want to go back. I would rather go forward with optimism.
