Appeals suck if you are poor.

Actually everything sucks if you are poor. But the legal system really sucks.

Even if justice were fair, it would seem to me to be unwise politically to execute a larger percent of minorities (statistically speaking) than whites. But justice is not fair. Due process is not fair process- it is just due process. My GOD people don't want the government giving money to ARTISTS, because a bureaucracy cannot be trusted with the money- and you want a bureaucracy executing people? Yeah- that makes sense.

I changed my position on the Death Penalty when I thought about it more deeply and had to come to terms that the people who run CalTrans and the DMV would be in charge of the executions. I have to admit that I was tempted by the "no recidivism" argument, but that is weak when it is applied inconsistently. All of us here should understand cost/benefit ratios. Life-with-possibility-of-parole has the capability to make restitution for its mistakes. AND it is cheaper. It is also more moral, IMO.
