VERY interesting idea! I think, though, that those who didn't hack would be precisely those who now continue the cycle of crime of poverty. It might still save a significant percentage, though.

This has proven to be an interesting discussion. It has had none of the partisan mudslinging and name-calling so characteristic of these political threads.

I've always wished it were possible to set up boarding schools at the
elementary grades, outside the city, for ghetto kids.

I've seen a couple of examples of that sort of facility on TV. It seemed like a great idea to me. If the problem is the developmental environment of at-risk kids, it's pretty obvious to consider getting them out of that environment. But I'm not sanguine about it happening. I don't have a clue as to how it could be implemented.

First of all there are those who would consider it racist. Good people with the temerity to champion something that would get them labeled racist are few and far between.

Then there's the family thing. It takes a monumental problem before anyone would consider separating a kid from his family. The state surely would never get away with it. The family could do it voluntarily, but by the time a mother got to the point that she'd send her kid off to one of your camps, he'd probably be well past the point where you could make a difference with him.

I've given thought to the notion of relocating whole families, a few here and a few there. That would be labeled racist, too, but it's probably more feasible, although more expensive. I would be happy to sponsor a family. I'd bet others would, too.

P.S. And when we've gotten that up and running, we could get the kids who are being home schooled by militia families into the program. <g>
