I'm not talking about public revisions. The company would contact the covering analyst and say "I think there may be a problem with your model, are you sure you feel comfortable with your gross margin numbers? Maybe they should be 25 basis points higher?" They would massage expectations. I think Intel practiced reg FD before it was cool, they didn't communicate with analyst's the same way that some others did.

Even in the case where the company beat expectations regularly (MSFT), that doesn't mean they were not setting the expectation they could easily beat. Analyst's, I think, don't get heat when their estimates are low, as long as they have a buy+ rating. They get heat when the companies miss low.

I was surprised to hear that CSCO very recently asked the analysts to send them their models. Post reg FD this seems like it could lead to some violations.

Maybe I'm way off base on these impressions. Based on years of anecdotal info.
