I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked. You must be mellowing. <g>

No, I don't think that everyone has legitimate points. Well, maybe they *have* them but they don't regularly *make* them. I'm hard pressed to find legitimate points in anyone's rant, particularly those made late at night. Nor in some cryptic comment or smart remark. Nor in opinions that seem to come out of thin air. Or from some nutter newsletter.

And people on SI try
to make preferences into scared law, and argue about them as if they were gospel, when they are merely
inclination.


But what I thought was worth emphasizing in Steven's message was about willingness to acknowledge those points with the occasional "touche" or "that makes sense." It tends to reduce the bipolarity you speak of.

Relativism is quite different from tolerance or open-mindedness although they may look similar in practice. Relativists may think it's unnecessary to acknowledge the points of others since all points are equally valid, but for the rest of the world, it's like a handshake.
