I grew up in Chicago in the 50's and remember seeing Nike missiles along the Lake front.........those old Nikes are rust somewhere...........worth every penny...?

Who's to know? They may not have been visually pleasing, but we're all prospering post cold war aren't we? BTW, nearly all the new tech companies today are based off of military research, CDMA in particular. I don't know, maybe a little cold war is not such a bad thing.

An effective missile defense is a very long shot with existing technology. We would be spending a huge amount of money to develop a system that would, at best, not be anywhere near effective enough to prevent catastrophe from a sophisticated attack.

I agree with those that fear a terrorist type event with a smuggled bomb is a more likely scenario.

There is a large group of scientists and military personnel with expertise and solid resumes in missile technology who will be publicly advising against the missile defense system as an ineffective waste of money. I think it will die on the vine.

Tim, I grew up in NY in the 30's and 40's and the idea of an atomic bomb was considered preposterous, not to mention hydrogen bombs or ICBM's. There are certainly hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of people who survived WWII because many people kept trying and invented that bomb. If not them, someone else would have sooner or later.

There may very well never be a good missile defense but if there ever is I sure hope this country has it as soon as, or before anyone else. We sure won't if we don't try because others are working on this as we speak. To say that it's an idea that will never come is to ignore history and those who ignore history................well you know the rest.<gg>
