rrman OT. Have you inspected the flywheel for damaged/ broken teeth? Has the transmission been removed recently? - potential misalignment issues?. I have never heard of planetary gears in a starter- only in transmissions. Are you referring to the bendix or starter gear . I have never heard of plastic gears either. The magnetic issue sounds dubious to me. Obviously, i'm not there and cannot see/hear the problem and perhaps i am wrong but I do have experience with automotive tough love. My guess is there is an issue with the flywheel. These sensor magnets are small . If all else fails kick the car - it won't fix the car but you might feel better -g- Good Luck
