The trend in getting higher operating frequency in 2001 will be the same as in 2000. Accordingly, the competition for higher operation of CPUs between U.S.-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Intel Corp. will continue during 2001. On Jan. 6, 2000, AMD started shipping Athlons with a speed of 800MHz, and also on Nov. 20, 2000, Intel started shipping a 1.5GHz version of the Pentium 4, meaning that the CPUs' operating frequency had advanced 1.9 times during 2000. There is no doubt in reaching the operating frequency of 2GHz by the end of 2001. For AMD, it is planing a few detailed changes on its Athlon in the first quarter of 2001. AMD's planned CPU, code-named "Palamino," will be for desktop PCs, and its family of products will also debut for workstations, notebook PCs and other devices. According to AMD's plan, CPUs for use in desktop PCs and workstations will be marketed initially at the operating frequency of 1.33GHz, and will be followed by higher version of more than 1.5GHz operation in the second quarter of 2001, and more than 1.7GHz by the end of 2001. "Palamino" for use in notebook PCs is planned to have an operating frequency of 1GHz by the end of 2001, and accordingly there will be an era of high-speed notebook PCs operating at 1GHz. Followed by "Palamino," AMD will start shipping samples of its succeeding "Thoroughbred" CPU in the fourth quarter of 2001. This will be the product with its fine 0.13-micron technologies, while the preceding CPU "Palamino" is based on the 0.18-micron process. As a result, the expectations for high-speed operation and low power consumption will be carried out in its "Throughbred." Intel defines the year 2001 as "the year of Pentium 4," and intends to replace the currently most popular desktop PCs' CPU Pentium III with Pentium 4, which is easier to operate at a higher frequency. Intel plans to start marketing the down-specified version of the Pentium 4 operating at 1.3GHz for use in low-priced PCs in the first quarter of 2001, but at the same time, Intel is trying to advance its operating frequency to 2GHz by the third quarter of 2001. Intel also intends to use 0.13-micron technologies in its Pentium 4 processing, and intends to try to advance its operating frequency. As a result, Intel says the shipment volume of the Pentium 4 will exceed that of the Pentium III in the first quarter of 2002.
