Nashville, Tenn. (January 11, 2001)—Service Merchandise, once known as "America's Leading Jeweler," announced on Wednesday that it will layoff 1,750 employees by mid-February in order to speed its way out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, casting doubts on the company's long-term viability in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

"It is now time to make the appropriate adjustments to our expense base through a reduction in the size of our workforce," said CEO Sam Cusano in a statement that also noted the cuts would save the company $35 million.
