I see the new administration is off to an auspicious start. They're talking about shutting down all three Potomac River bridges to accommodate a function scheduled at rush hour.

According to several federal and local sources, Bush's inaugural planners resisted changing the time of the opening celebration because they are locked into a four-day schedule of events. Pushing back the start time for the inaugural celebration would conflict with the Thursday evening candlelight dinners for those who helped bankroll the inaugural festivities. And shifting the opening celebration to Friday, as some law enforcement agencies had suggested, would conflict with the Texas State Society's Black Tie & Boots ball and other inaugural eve social functions.

The decision to have an inaugural event at the Lincoln Memorial on a Thursday afternoon was the result of poor planning, several officials said yesterday, speaking on the condition they not be identified.
