The depleted uranium is for the purpose of construction. It is the hardness desired for penetration of the projectile. It has nothing to do with nuclear weapons. It has no explosive characteristics(depleted uranium). It carries a traditional non-nuclear explosive charge within the hardened projectile.

Dear Les: You have a lot to learn about modern munitions. Depleted Uranium has NOTHING to do with tactical nuclear weapons. Its merely a VERY hard projectile capable of penetrating most armor. Once the shell penetrates through (works sort of like a plasma torch cutting) it explodes and destroys all that is inside. Isnt War FUN?? If people realized just HOW HORRIBLE war has become today we probably wouldnt have any anymore. JDN
