If AMD analyzed the way Intel does, it would be Al P3 vs. Al Athlon, and P4 could have been held back until it was worth releasing (permanently, perhaps?). As it is,

A very thorough analysis was done on the L1 design and there would have been virtually zero benefit from a larger cache.
