British Telecommunications Plc said on Friday its wireless division, set for flotation in the second half of the year, added 5.5 million new customers worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2000.

The growth takes its total to 20.7 million, up from 12 million at end-1999.

"This is a telling result to add to our pioneering market development through innovation with Genie and the mobile Internet," BT Wireless Chief Executive Peter Erskine said in a statement.

BT said it had 2.4 million WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) mobile Internet users, exceeding its expectations. As well as previously released numbers for Cellnet in the UK, the figures include a 30 percent rise in customers at Viag Interkom in Germany. Interkom now has 3.2 million subscribers.

Cellnet added a record 1.5 million customers in the quarter, but analysts and competitors have questioned whether its decision to sell handsets for as low as 20 pounds means those customers would be profitable. <<
