Silicon based imagers can be capable of greater sensitivity than film. For example 8mm film based movie cameras needed bulky movie lights. Then came solid state video cameras, which needed no movie lights,and some are even capable of working by candle light.

Maybe you dont need a flash with some solid state cameras.
