Pentagon: India, Pakistan make chemical weapons
By AAMIR SHAH

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Both India and Pakistan are
developing chemical weapons and working to improve their nuclear
capabilities, says a report published Saturday in Pakistani newspapers.

Newspapers quoted a U.S. Department of Defense report saying India had the
facilities to make both chemical and biological weapons. Evidence suggests
some of these facilities were doing research on chemical and biological
warfare.

According to the report, Pakistan also imports chemicals that have dual
use. These chemicals can be used for making medicines as well as chemical
weapons.

The report said that both the nations claim that they have been following
the policy of minimum nuclear deterrence but evidence suggests otherwise.
India's nuclear capability, the report said, was already beyond its need for
minimum deterrence and Pakistan has been trying to match Indian weapon
programs.

Both India and Pakistan tested their nuclear devices in May 1998 and since
then they have been developing weapon delivery systems. They have already
tested several short and medium range ballistic missiles capable of carrying
nuclear warheads.

The rivals, already have fought three wars since their independence from
Britain in 1947.
