08:28 AM DJ Anixter Estimate -2: First Call 4Q Net View 52c/Shr

SKOKIE, Ill. (Dow Jones)--Anixter International Inc. (AXE) doesn't expect the return of a "significant" amount of inventory to Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) will affect fourth quarter profit, which Anixter estimates at 50 cents to 53 cents a share.

A First Call/Thomson Financial survey of five analysts produced a mean fourth quarter earnings estimate of 52 cents a share.

In a press release Tuesday, Anixter said its earnings estimate excludes a charge of about 12 cents a share related to the initiation of an accounts receivable securitization program.

Anixter said the circumstances that led to the return of about $200 million of inventory to Lucent will also lower fourth quarter revenue.

On Dec. 21, Lucent said it would take back some equipment sold to systems integrators or distributors that wasn't used or passed on to customers due to weakness in the service provider market.

In Tuesday's release, Anixter, one of Lucent's distributors, said it expects to continue a "fruitful working relationship" with the company.

For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1999, the company had operating income of $32.1 million, or 36 cents a diluted share, excluding charges. Revenue was $ 706 million.

Someone was just on CNBC (an analyst or head of a fund, sorry I just caught the end of the conversation), however, when asked by a caller what he thought of LUCENT he said that if you could catch it at a price beginning with a 2 you should take advantage of that.

He said he thought it would soon pop maybe into the mid 20's and that the caller should take advantage of that.

At first I thought the analyst was advising to "buy" but then he said this is a troubled company so I guess he meant sell as soon as it got into a price range starting with a 2.

When he was told that LUCENT was just over $20 in after hours, he was surprised.

Anybody catch the same thing I did?
