It's scientist peer pressure. When I was at the physics ashram they wouldn't let us believe in a personal god. It was praise science at dawn, lecture all morning, lab all afternoon and report writing all evening. No time left for a personal god and then there was all that horrid peer pressure. What do you say when people keep asking you if you "aren't saved" because they expect you not to be? It was my dirty little secret that I had animist beliefs and felt this connection with the world around me.

It was mortifying.

Very interesting article, Dan! So approximately 93% of the general population vs. 7% of the polled members of the NAS believe in a "personal God".

I have to say though, that I'd like to know how many of the scientists have a more fuzzy view, ie, believe in a supreme being or force that is a benign and organizing factor. Or other shades of agnosticism.

This is the biggest, most recurring argument my husband and I have. I, trained a psychologist, believe in God and feel stroingly about people's need to tailor their belief in ways that help them explain and cope with their life experiences. My philosopher husband is an atheist.

I haven't had time to read the article, but neither my husband nor I believe in God. When my mother comes for a visit, she prays to herself b4 dinner, and that is fine. We do not tell her that she cannot do so. And she does not try and force her religious beliefs upon us.
