why worry about preserving or protecting our natural resources when the end of the world is just around the corner.

And you may be right. Mr. Bush's choice for Defense Secretary is Mr. Rumsfeld (spelling). He wants to adopt a hard-line position against Russia and China.

And a headline in today's NYTimes: "China and Russia are working on a friendship treaty, the strongest sign yet of their shared unhappiness with American supremacy and plans to build a missile shield."

......But their unusual effort to craft a more formal "strategic partnership," as the Chinese describe it, reflects the intensity of their concerns about American global power and especially about the proposal for a national missile defense, which Russia and China fear will put them at a military disadvantage."
