"But there are whole communities of people for whom belief in spirits is alien and unnecessary. Few of my friends believe in a creator/diety, and none attends religious services. They are good people--moral, thoughtful, upstanding citizens and worthy friends.

During my lifetime, I have experienced bigotry as a woman, an ethnic minority, and a secular. They
all hurt and they're all wrong. They're also non-constructive. It would be better to focus on "the
content of character" and ethics of our citizens and elected officials than to fixate on the source
from which the individual derives them."

Your letter is excellent. As a woman, I have also experienced discrimination. It's still out there, too.

What I like is when you say "it would be better to focus on "the content of character.". I'm not completely sure though that you can separate an individual entirely from the source. I believe the source,or an individual's background, may have an impact. How much? I don't know.

I've been very lucky in that I live with a mixture of people. Their backgrounds are diverse. They have seen a great deal of the world, and they know a great deal about the world. So it doesn't bother them that I don't believe in God, and I am not upset if they do. I've met many homosexuals and lesbians, and their sexual preferences have not created problems.. Within blocks of my home there are Jewish synagogues and a Unitarian Church.

I enjoy interacting with people whose ethnic background is different from mine as long as they do not try to persuade me to adopt their religious or political beliefs.
