You need both. When Intel had nothing except integrated chipsets (unless you want to count Rambus chipsets, but let's not start that right here). It had a big infrastructure hole at its high end. When AMD had no integrated chipsets, it had a big infrastructure hole at its low end. The ironic thing for both companies is that Intel probably needed a non-integrated chipset more than AMD did, and AMD needed an integrated chipset more than Intel did (given their relative market positions last year).
