Mephisto, M L King Jr continues to be a very important person in my life ... I admired, respected and loved him. During the winter of 1965, a few months after my wife Jan and I were married, and during the same period that the Selma marches were ongoing in Alabama, Dr King came to Penn State to speak at Recreation Hall. Jan and I got there early to get good seats. I will never forget it - it was an important moment in my life. I was at work at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company factory in the south central section of Los Angeles three years later when he was murdered in Memphis - I will never forget that either. Since that time, some of my life has always been focused on trying to make up for the long-term negative effects of slavery in the U.S. Jan and I started the "Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Grant-In-Aid Program" at Penn State in the mid-80s and a similar fund at Talladega College in Alabama last year. At this time, I am trying to create an influential volunteer role for myself involving race relations and affirmative action at Penn State. Thank you very much for posting the words of Dr King. Mephisto, Thank you for posting and reminding us of that most important, cataclysmic speech. I was giving a solo flute recital at my college the day he was killed. Someone came back where I was and told me about the shooting. I played about half the work in shock and the other half in tears. Ken, I am glad to know that those who had the means stepped up to keep this dream alive. There are many others who with their life, words and attitudes have done the same. I, too, still have a dream.
