Prices for DRAM Chips to Hit Bottom Before June

The global market for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips is expected to hit bottom in the second quarter of this year, two Korean economic research institutes said yesterday.

Dongwon Economic Research Institute (DERI) predicts that there will be a shortage of the chips in the mid-second quarter if the personal computer market in the same period grows 12 percent from a year earlier.

Sejong Securities also expects the oversupply of semiconductors in the market to improve in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, DERI expects the semiconductor industry to see spiraling price hikes for DRAM chips starting in late March after a slight price drop between February and mid-March, while Sejong predicts that the price hikes will begin in late February.
