Good quote: Dawkins - "If I say something
offensive to religious people, I'll be universally censured, including by
many atheists. But if I say something insulting about Democrats or
Republicans or the Green Party, one is allowed to get away with that.
Hiding behind the smoke screen of untouchability is something religions
have been allowed to get away with for too long."

So, I wonder how will we survive a Bush Presidency that supports a right-wing Christian
platform.

Yeah, I worry, too. But I worried when Reagan won and nothing earth shattering happened. I even voted for him the second time. (Am I allowed to say that on this thread?) So maybe it won't this time either. I think there are enough people out there throughout the political spectrum who are smart enough to know a theocracy isn't in the country's best interests.

This is probably because there is nothing numinous about political beliefs, or mysterious about their origins and possible purposes.

Life, the fact of "being", however, is numinous and mysterious, despite reductionist explanations to the contrary. Most people probably realize that in thinking and speaking about it, its possible source and origins, they are speaking of something beyond themselves, beyond their own power and understanding. Organized religion has "collected" all that mystery and power unto itself, rightly or wrongly. Politics could never serve to inspire the same sense of awe, hence, never the same sense of "sacrilege".
