This round of layoff tells me that the restructuring started in last year is close to the end. To cut the unprofitable divisions and product lines is a difficult decision. It is like a patient who needs to make a decision whether to cut his tumor off. It's painful, but he has to do so. 3Com made one big mistake when it acquired USRX. It brought in the product lines that failed to make money. 3Com tried to enter high-end networking equipment markets, but found there were no rooms for them to stay. 3Com has been lacking of flagship products that could impress investors for years. Spinning off PALM was the best thing 3Com has ever done for investors. BruceC, as the new CEO, is trying to complete the restructure of the company at the beginning of his taking over from EricB. It's good. I would like to see 3Com to turn to a new company that is different from what when EricB was in charge and show the Street some impressive results and sound products that bring in $$$s in the future.
