You can hook up a monitor to the old laptop. There is a toggle switch on laptops that will enable you to switch to a monitor.

i promise not to damage the screen...

if it is a nice laptop and it is worth saving maybe a docking station and moonitor would do the trick...

otoh

new laptops are so much more powerful and relatively inexpensive (i have heard they even give away printers or scanners)...

and with that... it is bed time for me.
