I'm starting to believe this thing is overdone.

My guiding light is that while I believe that cable modem will dominate residential service, it performs inferior to DSL for small and medium business. Lots of issues including IP addressing, firewalling etc make DSL the dominant last mile technology for small and medium stuff. For big customers fiber is the only way to go. The beauty of this is that these are higher margin connections compared to residential subscribers.

Subsequently the 1700 colocations are a real time/cost value. Anyone else trying to replicate this would need a couple years at least to get this many sites up and running. In two years the game is over since its very painful to churn a functional corporate web connection. Therefore anyone with installs in place have a distinct time to market advantage. Therefore it is highly likely that somebody with deep pockets will step up to the table and take these guys out. There are alot of big cos on the sidelines without a strong national data retail presence. This include Worldcom, quest, lvlt, gblx, msft to name a few. Also the ILECs are looking of out of region connectivity and these guys have wads of cash.

NPNT may go broke but if they can hold on a couple more quarters and the fed continues its trend we may find some reasonable gains here.
