When I was longshoring after hrs I would find some
Russian crews who would hide me out in the
crew quarters , ( from the officers ) we would play
chess and drink vodka and if no one could translate
use hand signals to bull shit.
They were very human and didn't buy into their idiolgy
BS as much as most Americans buy into ours.

The Officers were much more "straight" than American
Officers , and I'm sure they would have tossed me off
had they found me..but they crews had a cover story
ready and gave me stack of the Propaganda hand outs
ready to show the officers if we got discovered.

To me it was a poor mans way of visiting Russia
on the gut level, I liked chess but they could
out drink me !!!

I also took things to trade
not so much to make money ( as they had very little)
but to get souvenirs ..I still have some of the
Bear Skin hats <G>

But no; for the most part from what I could see
they didn't have a lot of respect for their leaders.
This was back in the 70s before "peristoka"

A Joke they told a lot was,
"they pretend to pay us"
"So we pretend to work"
------------
For the most part we didn't even get into
politics just seaman type stuff ..
