their composition is quite different. notably the HUI doesn't contain gold companies that have hedges longer than 1 1/2 years out. it's the PURE gold/silver stock index, and as such much more relevant than the XAU. Phelps Dodge has e.g. over 13% weight in the XAU...and they produce mainly copper, gold/silver are minuscule by-products of their copper mining.
